‘Making Grantham Beautiful’ through local Rotary projects

Every year, Grantham Sunrise Rotary runs a programme of small environmental projects which focus on ‘Making Grantham Beautiful’. These projects have been a great opportunity to involve community groups and organisations in hands-on volunteering and demonstrate the impact of Rotary at a local level. As the Rotary year comes to an end, we thought we would share an overview of the projects we have been involved in.

Renovating community gardens

Young Persons Learning Provision Project: In 2023, Grantham Sunrise Rotary supported YPLP to enhance their outdoor learning space. Led by Praf and supported by YPLP students, Grantham Sunrise Rotary refurbished three containers, reinstated a pergola and created several raised flower beds. You can find out more about this project in our Young Persons Learning Provision Project Blog.

Grantham Senior Citizen Centre: The project to restore the Grantham Senior Citizen Centre’s outdoor space started in February 2024. Over a number of weeks Grantham Sunrise Rotarians and volunteers helped to clear the space of trees and weeds, remove the rubbish and paint the fence to create an outdoor seating space for the centre’s café. As part of this, Grantham Sunrise also painted a number of decorative butterflies which sit on the fence to brighten this outdoor space. You can read more about this in our Grantham Senior Citizen Centre Blog.

Planting crocus bulbs as part of Rotary’s Crocus project for End Polio Now

Every year Grantham Sunrise Rotary club plants thousands of crocus bulbs throughout Grantham as part of the Purple4Polio campaign, which helps to raise awareness and funds for End Polio Now. In collaboration with local organisation TESS, we planted an incredible 8,000 crocus bulbs last year and look forward to continuing this in the new Rotary year.

Planting daffodils in Grantham

For many people, the blooming of daffodils is the first sign of spring. Grantham Sunrise Rotary started the tradition of planting daffodils to brighten the dark mornings several years ago and the beds of flowers around the town are a welcome sight. Last year, Grantham Sunrise Rotary and Tess planted several thousand daffodils on roundabouts and on popular routes for residents to see and enjoy.

Trees in Dysart Park

At the end of November 2023, Grantham Sunrise Rotary led on a project to plant twenty-five trees around the perimeter of the playing field at Dysart Park. This was jointly funded by Grantham Sunrise Rotary and Rotary District Environment Grant.
