Two aspiring young leaders from Grantham take part in Rotary leadership programme

Grantham Sunrise Rotary proudly sponsored two promising young leaders to participate in the Rotary Young Leadership Award (RYLA) programme earlier this year.

The Young RYLA programme is a residential course which takes place over one weekend, usually in February. The course is designed to develop their confidence and leadership skills, empowering them to become leaders in their own community.

Our RYLA candidates this year were nominated by Grantham Sunrise Rotarians for their involvement and excellence in sport and extra-curricular activities. After an informal interview process, we were confident that Polina and Alexia would be brilliant future leaders, RYLA candidates and ambassadors for our club. We were very pleased when they accepted the two sponsored places.

Alongside Young RYLA candidates from other Rotary clubs, Polina and Alexia took part in a series of outdoor activities, team building exercises and leadership tasks which helped them achieve points throughout the two-and-a-half-day course. At the end of their programme, the participants and their respective rotary clubs were invited to a presentation ceremony. We were so pleased that our club President, Les Jones was able to attend the celebration. After participants were given their certificate of completion, they were given their final group scorings.

Polina’ groups were awarded 1st place and Alexia’s groups scored 2nd place. Both candidates were incredibly pleased!

Following the Young RYLA program, Polina and Alexia attended a Rotary meeting to share their experiences with the club. Both candidates were asked what they enjoyed most, to which they both answered by talking about the activities they were able to try in including caving and team challenges. Polina also shared how the support of her team helped her to overcome her fears and take part in abseiling, something which she found particularly challenging to start with. She shared how her experience helped her gain a better understanding of how important supporting the whole group to achieve is when being a leader.

We could not be prouder of Polina and Alexia for all that they gave and gained on the Young RYLA programme and we look forward to seeing what comes next for these future leaders.
