Grantham Student Lauren Raynor, who is studying maths and English at Young Persons Learning Provision (YPLP) on Trent Road, Grantham, attended a week long outdoor activities centre near Keswick called The Calvert Trust Centre. Lauren was sponsored by Grantham Sunrise Rotary, supported by A Rotary Foundation District Grant and a grant from The Grantham Youth Trust.
The week long course included, rock climbing, orienteering, canoeing, horse riding, abseiling, hire wire obstacle course, archery, caving, all designed to bring out the best in candidates, get them out of their comfort zones, build confidence and team spirit and of course friendships. Lauren said, “ my favourite activities were horse riding and abseiling, and making new friends”. She also said, “I was scared at first on some of the activities, but our team leaders and friends helped me overcome some of those fears and really felt I gained a lot more confidence and surprised myself”. Rotarian Irvin Metcalf went along as an Instructor helper for the second year running. The role included helping and caring for the six candidates in the group, led by senior Calvert instructor Kirsty Young. Irvin said, “ It is a great way to put something back into the community and wonderful to encourage and see the candidates really achieve something they thought they couldn’t do. You also learn plenty about yourself”.
